CENTRIPETAL AND CENTRIFUGAL FORCE :
◆ Centripetal and Centrifugal Force : When a body moves along a circular
path with constant velocity (constant in magnitude ) in clockwise or anticlockwise or direction then it's direction at every point of its motion changeing. As velocity is a vector quantity, which have both magnitude and direction. Through the magnitude of its velocity is constant but due to change in direction the velocity of the body continuously changing. According to Newton's First Law of Motion "Every body continues in its state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line unless it is compelled by an external force to change that state." So to produce a change in the direction of its motion an external force must act continuously on the body. During it's circular motion the body tends to move along the tangent at every point with a constant velocity
Therefore there must should change the direction of its motion.
Thus the force which directed towards the centre of the circular path and always acts along the radius of the circle at every point is known as centripetal force. The magnitude of the centripetal force is given by,
F = mv^2/r
Where m = mass of the body, v = velocity of the body and r = radius of the circular path.
* According to Newton's Third Law of motion, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The centripetal force action balanced by a reaction force ( centrifugal force ). The two forces are of equal in magnitudes but opposite in direction. So the centrifugal force always acts away from the centre of the path. The centrifugal force does not act on the body in motion,the only force acting on the body in motion is the centripetal force. The centrifugal force acts on the source of the centripetal force to displace it radially
from the centre of the path. Thus the magnitude of the centrifugal force is same as the centripetal force
i.e., mv^2/r
